Breaking the Silence on Domestic Violence (BTSDV) was founded in 2015 following the tragic deaths of two women in Manitoba, killed by their intimate partners while seeking protection orders. This heartbreaking event sparked a powerful call to action, as survivors across the province rallied together to say, "Enough is enough!"
On November 25, 2015, Zita Somakoko, a domestic violence survivor, partnered with the Manitoba Association of Women’s Shelters to organize Manitoba’s first forum on breaking the silence around domestic violence. It was here that Zita courageously shared her story publicly for the first time in 15 years, inspiring others to find their own voices and step forward with their stories.
What began as an awareness movement has since grown into a provincial organization, representing the voices of over 500 members as we advocate against domestic, family, and gender-based violence. Today, BSDV stands as a leading voice in Manitoba, focused on empowering survivors and working tirelessly to create a safer community.
Recognizing the critical need for dedicated support for survivors—women, children, and families impacted by domestic violence—Breaking the Silence on Domestic Violence was formally incorporated in 2021. Guided by faith and commitment, we continue to champion the rights of survivors and support them on their journey to healing.
