Harnessing Social Media to Break the Silence on Domestic Violence

At Breaking the Silence on Domestic Violence (BTSDV), we believe in the transformative power of words and images to heal, empower, and create change. As survivors and advocates, we’ve seen firsthand how sharing stories can shatter the isolation that so often surrounds domestic violence. Today, we’re diving into how social media can be a powerful tool for primary prevention stopping violence before it starts by raising awareness, educating communities, and challenging harmful norms. Inspired by global efforts to address gender-based violence, including femicide (the killing of women and girls because of their gender), we’re adapting these insights to our mission of supporting survivors and building safer futures for all.

Why Social Media Matters in Preventing Domestic Violence

Domestic violence affects millions worldwide, and sadly, it too often escalates to tragic outcomes like femicide. According to the United Nations, between five and six women are killed every hour by someone they know often in the context of intimate partner violence. Here in Canada and beyond, we need to name these issues clearly to drive real change. That’s where social media comes in: it’s an accessible platform to educate the public, professionals, and policymakers about the roots of domestic violence, from sexism and misogyny to power imbalances in relationships.

Our goal at BTSDV is to increase understanding and spark conversations that lead to action. We’ve drawn from campaigns like #CallItFemicide, which urges us to recognize and label gender-based killings, and #FemicideIs, which highlights risk factors such as controlling behaviors, isolation, and unchecked aggression. We can apply these to broader domestic violence awareness by creating and sharing content that spotlights warning signs, survivor stories, and paths to safety. For instance, we’ve developed resources like our Survivor Toolkit and GBV Toolkit for teens, which can be amplified online to reach those who need them most.

Creating Impactful Social Media Content: Our Guidelines

Social media isn’t just about posting it’s about posting thoughtfully to honor survivors, avoid harm, and inspire positive change. We’ve compiled these best practices based on proven strategies, ensuring our messages empower rather than retraumatize.

What to Avoid:

  • Harmful or Triggering Images: Steer clear of graphics showing violence, blood, or graphic depictions. These can retraumatize survivors, desensitize viewers, and fail to respect the dignity of those we’ve lost. Instead, let’s focus on hope and resilience.
  • Victim-Blaming Content: Never use images or words that suggest survivors are at fault or justify abusers’ actions. This reinforces myths like “they could have left sooner” and perpetuates the very attitudes that enable violence.
  • Generic or Distracting Posts: Avoid vague memes or unrelated visuals that water down the message. Make sure your content is specific to domestic violence, tailored to your audience, and tied to real contexts like local statistics or support resources.

What to Embrace:

  • Honoring Stories and Faces: Share images that feature survivors’ voices (with consent), symbols of solidarity like ribbons or candles, or tributes that celebrate lives and demand justice.
  • Challenging Root Causes: Use visuals that call out sexism, patriarchy, and toxic masculinity. For example, highlight how everyday attitudes contribute to violence and promote equality and respect in relationships.
  • Local and Relevant Focus: Incorporate Canadian stats, laws, or community stories to make it relatable. Tie in our resources, like safety planning guides, to show practical steps toward prevention.

By following these guidelines, we can turn social media into a force for good starting dialogues that educate and mobilize.

Beyond the Screen: Turning Awareness into Action

While social media is a fantastic starting point, it’s not the end-all solution. Preventing domestic violence requires all of us to challenge norms, support policies for better protection, and provide resources for healing. At BTSDV, we’re committed to this through our support line, volunteer opportunities, and advocacy work.

Your voice matters. Whether you’re a survivor reclaiming your story, a friend offering support, or an ally learning more, sharing thoughtfully on social media can be someone’s lifeline. Together, we’re building a world where domestic violence has no place where hope, strength, and community prevail.

If you’re ready to join the cause, head to our Support Line or become a volunteer today. Let’s keep the conversation going—your kindness could change a life.
