Breaking the Silence: Learning from Canada's Efforts to Prevent Domestic Homicides

At Breaking the Silence on Domestic Violence (BTSDV), we know that every story of survival is a beacon of hope in the fight against abuse. As a survivor-led organization, we’re all about empowering those who’ve faced the unimaginable, offering compassionate support, and building a community where healing thrives. Today, we’re diving into the powerful work of the Canadian Domestic Homicide Prevention Initiative (CDHPI) a vital knowledge hub that’s shining a light on how we can stop domestic violence from turning deadly. Their insights align so closely with our mission to support survivors and families, and we’re excited to share them with you in a way that sparks action and resilience.

The Stark Reality: Domestic Homicides in Canada

Imagine this: In Canada, one in every five murders is a domestic homicide. That’s a heartbreaking statistic that hits close to home for so many of us. CDHPI pulls together crucial information from domestic violence death reviews, coroners’ investigations, research, and more across our provinces and territories. Their goal? To uncover promising practices that can prevent these tragedies before they happen. By focusing on risk assessment, management, and safety planning, they’re helping communities like ours build stronger safeguards.

We at BTSDV believe in turning knowledge into power. Just like our own resources for safety planning and recovery, CDHPI’s work reminds us that awareness is the first step toward change. They’ve even created an interactive map showing initiatives in every jurisdiction check it out to see what’s happening right in your area.

Spotlight on Vulnerable Communities: No One Left Behind

Domestic violence doesn’t affect everyone the same way, and CDHPI gets that. Through their five-year partnership project (2015-2020), they zeroed in on groups that face unique barriers: Indigenous peoples, immigrants and refugees, those in rural, remote, or northern areas, and children exposed to abuse. These communities often deal with extra layers of risk due to historical oppression, limited resources, geography, language, culture, age, or poverty.

This resonates deeply with our commitment at BTSDV to inclusivity and reconciliation. We dedicate ourselves to partnering with Indigenous communities in a spirit of collaboration, acknowledging past harms and working together for healing. CDHPI’s reports highlight trends in domestic homicides from 2010-2019, showing that “one is too many.” Their findings on vulnerable populations echo our call: We must address these disparities to create real safety for all.

Voices That Matter: Survivors and Service Providers Speak Up

What makes CDHPI’s work so transformative? They center the voices of those who’ve lived through it. In their report “Survivors’ Voices: Navigating Risk and Moving to Safety,” over 80 survivors mostly women from diverse backgrounds share raw insights on managing abuse and finding help. From rural moms to immigrant families, these stories offer practical advice like “Stay with them: How family and friends can help” and “There’s a way out: Insights from survivors.”

We’ve always said at BTSDV that sharing our stories is how we fight back with truth and resilience. These resources, developed with the Learning Network, are gold for anyone supporting a loved one or navigating their own path to safety. Plus, CDHPI surveyed service providers nationwide on risk assessment and safety planning for victims, perpetrators, and kids—available in English and French to make sure no one is excluded.

Recordings are still available, packed with tools to enhance multi-sectoral approaches think better coordination between services to keep families safe.
